End of week one post
Anne Lamott's shitty first drafts is for the most parts self explanatory. she talks about how every writer needs to use the drafting process before they finish there final body of work. No matter how much everyone hates to do it writing a terrible first draft that consists of every single thing that pops into your head at any given time is always very beneficial to you. For me this passage is also very similar to Gail Godwin's the watcher at the gates because it is always hard for me to write sloppy first drafts because of my perfectionist style of writing. I cant stand sentence fragments and not connecting my writing all through out my passage. I think this is a reflection of how I am in real life. I always feel like a have my own little voice inside my head that wont stop screaming when i write sloppy, kind've like the watcher at the gate. I am confident that this passage will help me to not be so critical of my own writing. As much as I hate to admit it i can really learn from the shitty first drafts passage. Unless I am forced to write rough drafts I usually ignore that part of writing. I need to start using that method more often because as much as I hate it, I can tell that I write a lot more thorough when I use the drafting process. Lorrie Moore's How to Become a Writer was a great example of how I can learn to use creative personas in my writing. The passage was also a great example on how I can create charaters with vivid details to help capture the emotions of the audience. I found this piece of wrinting a lot different than the other two passages in that it described one persons own work for the main portion of the writing. I also found it very confusing at times. But after reading this passage I am confident that I will be able to create more detailed and abstract characters in my own writing.
